A face that has become a legend

Priest Harutyun Yerznkyan, abbot of the famous Halghpat monastery, had four sons. Here, family, the priest stopped to take a photo. Here is the priest's house, here is the priest's village, here is the priest's monastery.
And here is Metekhi prison.
The monastery is for praying, the house is for living, the village is the dwelling place of our ancestors and us, and what is Metekhi prison for? Metekhi prison is for the priest's four sons and the priest Harutyun Yerznkyan himself.
The priest had four sons and taught them - Aib, Ben, Gim, Da, Ech, Za, E, Et, To... Our Father, you are here, your name is holy... this is not the life we live... May your kingdom... It won't be like this... - and the priest who stood together with his family for a photo, broke away and went to pass the year 1904 the head of the famous Hajpat riot. From there to Metech. That's what Metech's beautiful prison was for. In the interrogator's room, the accused man compared any world of the Lord God with the real world of the landowner Tsar-Baratov-Abdulashvili and saw that it was not the world of his believers.
Until then, in 1888, the nine-year-old Aramais was sent to the Nersisyan school to study Armenian, Russian, arithmetic, history, geography, natural science, theology, hearing with rapture or suspicion that we, the Armenians, were one nation, had powerful kingdoms and kings, that we are now only Turkish vilayets and a Russian peripheral state and we want to be once again a powerful, independent, great Armenia - from sea to sea. Maybe, huh? How, with what, through whom, who will help us, who wants our power, why does he want, why would he want?
And here their "Rainbow" group of friends said a decisive "no" to that romanticism and romantics who wanted to commemorate the power of our ancient widow against the modern iron powers. He only said "no" so far. declaring that the "Rainbow" group has a fight and a principled fight, but that fight is not the spear fight proposed by the Armenian revolutionary allies.
Then the paths of study took the members of the group to different countries and cities, Stepan Shahumyan ended up in Riga... Aramais Yerznkyan in Geneva, at the University of Geneva and in the ranks of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party. Current so it was 1899. Yes, we have a fight and a big fight, but we will not take the Armenians out against the Turkish horde, we will join the united ranks of the Armenian-Russian-Georgian-Turkish-world proletariat. we will thicken our ranks and attack the old world. Long live the most savior international, proletarians of all countries, unite!
The Armenian Social-Democratic Union established in 1902 - Yerznkyan, Shahumyan, Knunyants, Zurabyan, Khanoyan, Khumaryan, Shahverdyan, Dashtoyan - its published newspapers: "Proletariat", "Kayt", "New Word", "Hosank" once and for all professed the principle of the proletarian international, because "Proletarians of all countries, "unite", it's true, was formulated in Europe, but it seemed to be formulated especially for the Caucasus, where the economic struggle turned into an inter-ethnic struggle by some amazing magic.
Everyone was looking for a way out. The starting point was the same, the paths were different, and in many cases the fellow travelers from the same starting point met as strangers and enemies at distant crossroads.
The Union of Armenian Social-Democrats was powerless to prevent the bloody Armenian-Tatar clashes, but managed to moderate those clashes and especially put a lot of effort into sheathing the exposed, often already bloody swords. Aramais Yerznkyan was in union with his Azerbaijani friends, Aramais Yerznkyan was in union with Tumanyan, Shirvanzade and our other elders. Their mission crossed the goals of some unknown people, and the conspiratorial bullets did not find Aramais Yerznkyan, but found his internationalist brother.
Tall, with a Socratic forehead, educated, thoughtful - in many cases, when moving from position to position, Yerznkyan waved not his beautiful internationalist flag, but his personal virtue.
The Genevan study was as much a study in the sciences as it was in the training of the theory of revolution. The theory is the theory, but later life was like a wall in front of many people, and that is much more because of their lack of broad-mindedness, so to speak, narrow-mindedness. Aramais Yerznkyan was able to lower the crossed swords, connect the unconnected, and bring the opposite poles together. That quality of his was more than needed in the most extraordinary moments of the Armenian history of his time.
He led the party's London convention to yesterday's gathering of hostile forces...
In 1912, Metekhi prison, maybe the prison cell where priest Harutyun Yerznkyan was imprisoned a few years ago. Luck smiled, the prison was full, not every politician had a single cell, and two notables were locked up in the same box: social-democrat Aramayis Yerznkyan and Westerner Suren Spandaryan. They were together for several months and became close. And because they were deprived of the opportunity to fight for the main goal, they began to publish a handwritten satirical paper against the warden and guards. Every time that newspaper became a feast for the prisoners, and for these two notables it was a constant pastime. And the founding of the newspaper "Paykar" (1916) was not entertainment, but a serious continuation of the great principled struggle, for which Aramais Yerznkyan was again in prison. He was released from prison by the February bourgeois-democratic revolution.
Lenin and Plekhanov highly appreciated the answers proposed by Aramais Yerznkyan and his friends to the solution of the national question. They had theoretically solved the national question and the Armenian national question. The worker-peasant revolution was going to be solved practically. However, the national extermination of Armenians in Western Armenia and partial extermination in Eastern Armenia, that unprecedented massacre in history, destroyed the problem of solving the Armenian national question. and with the destroyed problem, all the so clever, so clever, often clever, often stupid, non-Marxist and Marxist solutions were destroyed. 12 thousand square meters of land remained and seven thousand orphans on that land. The enemy was near and certain, the friend far and uncertain. Both the Armenian general and diplomat, and the poet and theoretician went mad. Forced to become independent, the confederation, separated from Russia, eventually came face-to-face with its archenemy. Having no other choice, he was in no hurry to take the extended hand of his relative. It refers to not accepting the deputation of Legrand, who came from Moscow to Transcaucasia on the issue of Armenia. Or because the negotiation is their wish, the first visit will be made by Legrand himself and not by me, Tigran Bekzadyans. Or, because they are in a difficult situation, they should pay both the first visit and respect to me, Legranis. They were both very principled, did not rush to meet, and apparently respected each other very much for such principle. An ancient nation was lost underfoot day by day.
The situation of Aramais Yerznkyan was laughable, rushing from Legrand to Bekzadyan, from Bekzadyan to Legrand, again and again, and did not think about his reputation and, above all, principle. In the end, he was able to meet Legrand and Bekzadyan near him, in a zone called neutral for others, but very principled for him, and conduct the negotiations in the only beneficial way for the ancient Armenian people. Yerznkyan was like that in "unprincipled" trifles and in fundamental matters. It was with this "unprincipledness" that he was able to solve hundreds of organizational issues, free his friends from arrest, and cope with the difficult task of publishing new newspapers.
... Passions were very hot, member of the Transcaucasian Seim and government (minister of labor), member of the Armenian National Council, Aramayis Yerznkyan, was not invited to the mainly federal government of the first republic of Armenia, as well as the first governing body of Soviet Armenia, the Hekhkom, but later, when the country needed, in the words of Hovhannes Tumanyan, leading, forgiving, patient, and good-looking figures, the attitude changed.
His great organizational energy, his personal charm were necessary for a resurgent Armenia, and here we see him in the government of Alexander Myasnikyan, in the post of People's Commissar of Agriculture.
- In the tribune of the first May Day parade of Armenian workers after Sovietization,
- While managing the commissions to eliminate the consequences of the Leninakan and Zangezur earthquakes,
- In the position of the chairman of the Republican Committee of the Party, which directly implements the Cultural Revolution,
- While editing the first Soviet-Armenian satirical journal, "Red Mosquito",
- in the halls of the first agricultural congress of Armenia,
- After the death of Tumanyan, in the position of the chairman of the Armenian Relief Committee.
Aramais Yerznkyan was the first statesman, a member of the government, who visited France abroad in 1924, representing his homeland, Soviet Armenia.

"Officially, he was in charge of the work of the Armenian Armenian Committee and the People's Committee of the People's Committee - a contemporary testifies - but we writers and artists considered Aramais Yerznkyan a kind of "second People's Committee".
Aramayis Yerznkyan, the Second People's Commissar. with the first Light People's Commissar Askanaz Mravyan held a meeting of the artists of the three transcaucasian peoples in Yerevan and at the end took a photo, here is Isahakyan, Demirchyan, Saryan, Romanos Melikyan, Titian Tabidze, Husein Javid, Zoryan, Shirvanzade, Terlemezyan... - good way to this demonstration of fraternization of artists.
In the words of Leo, the personal charm of "our dearly beloved Aramais Yerznkyan" was boundless, and it is not surprising that the brightest faces of the period were attracted to him: Fritjof Nansen, Henry Barbeus, Vasiliy Kamensky, Nikolai Koltsov, Titian Tabidze, Grigol Robakidze, Paolo Yashvili, Semyon Gecht, Yevgeny Lancere... Here is Yerznkyan. incomplete list of foreign close relatives. And it is noteworthy that the famous Georgian poet Titian Tabidze's poem "Steppe Gorge" mentions four faces who embody Armenia: Yerznkyan, Isahakyan, Saryan, Charents.
Aramais Yerznkyan is the co-author of Fritjof Nansen's book "Deceived People" to a certain extent. The book is about the great uprising and the Armenian people, it was written after that great friend of the Armenian people was in Soviet Armenia in 1925. And here in 1928 the famous Norwegian writes: "The role of Aramayis Yerznkyan, one of the most prominent leaders of the Armenian people and undoubtedly the most brilliant among them, was extremely important in the effectiveness of our commission of the League of Nations. To this day, we are under the spell of that majestic face of broad-minded thinking, rare work ability, exceptional kindness."
"In 1935 - a contemporary testifies - when I was in Paris and talking with Henri Barbus, the latter, after a series of questions, said:
- How does People's Commissar Aramayis Yerznkyan feel? He is very much like King Nebuchadnezzar. I liked him very much, the rebuilding Armenia needs such state leaders."
He is the People's Commissar of Agriculture of the Inter-Federation.
He is the chairman of the government's immigration commission.
He, the first deputy chairman of the People's Committee and the chairman of the Yerevan City Council, is to a significant extent the co-author of Alexander Tamanyan's people's house and is almost the main architect of the city of Yerevan under construction.
"There are people who think that the proletarian style from Arkhangelsk to the Sahara will be something similar in construction. They are nihilists or petty-bourgeois space citizens. The style determined by the process of production is related to the internal content and bears the stamp of the appropriate class, while also incorporating the influence of climate, geographical location, building materials and the nuances associated with the notions of labor creating material values in a given region. This is where our demand for a "national form" comes from," writes and demands the theorist of architecture Yerznkyan and orders and builds the political council chairman Yerznkyan.
"Yerevan, of course, could look different and very possibly not so original. But doesn't the architectural uniqueness of today's Yerevan symbolize the creative cooperation of the creator (Tamanyan) and the leader (Yerznkyan)" - Martiros Saryan.
"Aramais Yerznkyan. A face that became a legend in his lifetime. That bright and original son of the homeland, imbued with supreme humanity towards the people, became a historical necessity for a reborn Armenia" - Avetik Isahakyan.
His bright life was tragically cut short in 1937 in his fifty-eighth year. He also passed, as his friend Hovhannes Tumanyan would say. The rest of the Armenian people, the city of Yerevan, and our gratitude to Aramayis Yerznkyan, the eldest of the four sons of the rebellious abbot Harutyun of Haghpat Monastery, commissar, editor, publicist, diplomat, builder, energetic scientist.
We don't know if he took an oath when he entered the Haghpat monastery or the "Rainbow" student union, don't students like to swear, did he swear to be the master of the destiny of his divided people, his divided land, did he swear that no matter what and how it happens, my people are this... we don't know, but his life is very similar to the life of a person who started with an oath, worked and lived by an oath.
It is commonly said that artists are immortalized in their work. And public and political figures? The friend of Saryan, Charents, and Tumanyan with equal right, Mets Aramais Yerznkyan is in their works, is their equal authority, the founder of our life today.
