“We Are Our Mountains”

The geography of Armenian cinema is expanding: the timeless film “We Are Our Mountains” now has Italian subtitles.

On 16 October, Brusov State University hosted the opening ceremony of the Yerevan committee of the Dante Alighieri Society. The evening concluded symbolically with a screening of the film in its new Italian translation.

Addressing the Italian Ambassador, the Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, guests and students, Rector Davit Gyurjinyan emphasised that the translation was dedicated to Hrant Matevossian’s ninetieth anniversary. After the French version, the University had promised an Italian one—and kept its promise. German will follow.

The Italian Ambassador recalled an idea in perfect harmony with the Hrant Matevossian Centre’s motto, “Education through Culture”: culture is fundamental to every form of education. As early as 1976, at the Sanremo festival, the Italian newspaper L’Unità wrote that the award-winning “We Are Our Mountains” astonished viewers with its poetry and vitality.

Education begins with knowing one’s own cultural heritage and taking responsibility for it. Deeply Armenian, this heritage has long been part of world culture. “We Are Our Mountains” now speaks Italian too, while Matevossian’s truthful words continue their journey from language to language and generation to generation.
