I heard about the massacres from my friend, the writer Hrant Matevossian. He explained everything to me very well... but I understood nothing. I began to understand several years later, when I visited him in Armenia and looked through a book of documents about the massacres that was almost forbidden... What shook me then? What overwhelmed me? There was no room left for reflection or analysis. It was a Book. What moves me most is when a person, or an entire people, raises their grief and their dignity to the scale of a great book. The history of silencing grief and dignity has continued, in one form or another, from the very first day to this day.
