Ahnidzor. A Matevossian Pilgrimage Diary, 13 September 2025.
The children learned that one of the village’s founders was Ohanes, the grandfather of Matevossian’s father Ignat and patriarch of the family. They were struck by the thought that the writer laid foundations in literature as firmly as his ancestor had done in the village.
In the house, beside photographs of the brothers, they noticed a portrait of Tumanyan. After hearing its story, one child smiled and concluded, “So the best writers are born in Lori.” They also discovered the talents of Matevossian’s brothers and decided to read Hracho Matevossian.
While discussing “The Green Field”, the children recognised motherhood as its central idea and observed that the story has no evil characters. Other discoveries followed: the village school has only twelve pupils, farm animals can be surprisingly vocal, and the three children from Ahnidzor quickly became friends with their visitors.
The day remained one of discovery, wonder and radiant smiles. We are certain that the young pilgrims who visited Matevossian’s homeland will now love both their own country and the great writer even more. “Love begins with knowing” (H. M.).
