It is the birthday of a great writer—one who demanded more from literature than words and searched for the “monumental human being”.
Our Centre has received an important gift from sculptor Rafael Javakhyan. The portrait bust of Hrant Matevossian is now at home in the Hrant Matevossian Centre.
“It has been said that literature is longing: longing for Stone Age caves, for the future, for freedom and nature; longing for everything that exists and does not exist, for the possible and the impossible, longing for the good. If the good already exists, it longs for something better. Literature stands in opposition to life—even to a good life—from its own position of goodness; otherwise it would lose its endlessly revolutionary character, sever its bond with life and die. Now, when human reason has broken free of restraint and advances in absolute triumph, when the world seems to have reached the distant horizons literature once dreamed of—does literature praise life? Not at all. Literature searches for the monumental human being.”
