“In the foreword to the collection August, you quote a line from the essay Metsamor: ‘What was needed to prevent things from happening as they did?’ It sounds as though it were written about today. Is Matevossian’s writing prophetic, or does it simply speak of things that are always relevant?”

“I am convinced that it is prophetic. World literature has its prophet-writers. Matevossian said: ‘A writer shapes times and ideas… It was not Christ who gave birth to John, Luke and Matthew; it was Matthew, Luke and John who gave birth to Christ.’”

Matevossian is a writer of the future. Andrei Bitov once said that Matevossian’s time would come a hundred years later, when the writer had assumed his true place and the height he deserved. That would mean that both he and Armenia had found their rightful place.
